2019 Maryland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)

All STEM high school students are invited to participate in the 2019 Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) on Saturday, March 30 at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Patuxent Partnership (TPP), a non-profit organization that supports government, industry, and academia, located in southern Maryland has been selected to manage the MD JSHS program in collaboration with the Naval Air Warfare Center – Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) program is a tri-military service — Army, Navy, and Air Force — sponsored STEM event that promotes original STEM research and experimentation at the high school level by fostering creativity and academic achievement. By connecting the talented high school students, teachers, and research professionals, JSHS expands the talent base to support the needs of our military and nation.

The mission of JSHS is:

  • To promote research and experimentation in STEM in the Maryland high schools
  • Understand the importance of humane and ethical principles in research
  • Search out talented academic STEM students and encourage their interest and participation
  • Introduce research focused students to opportunities in academia, business, and government
  • Increase research, workforce development, and recruitment opportunities

Interested students will present their topic which includes an abstract, a 250 word paragraph to define the project– research conducted and the significant conclusions, followed by a research paper of 5-20 pages. Research papers are reviewed and some students are selected to present at the MD JSHS Symposium. This is a timed oral presentation of less than 12 minutes. The oral presentation can include power point slides with graphs, diagrams, and photos to help explain the research and topic. Posters also may be submitted.
